About Tandem Antiques & Design

We are Hilary and Steven Eklund. We met in 1997 in an antique shop in Hudson NY and connected exchanging snarky comments about an over-the-top English porcelain lamp. I guess our fate was sealed in those first moments – a future filled with old things and sarcasm.

Since then we have been all over the map, in an antiquing sense. Early on, selling at little flea markets and local antique shows, we loved the mod look of the 1960s. But Steve was raised by antique dealers and comes from a rich tradition of good country and primitive pieces. (Back when “primitive” indicated truly old and wonderful handmade items, rather than whatever new dreck it has come to signify.) So we dove into dealing in country – cupboards, blanket boxes, farm tables, signs, old paint, coverlets, white ironstone and lots more.

More recently we have returned to one of our first loves – modern design. We search for the form, materials and quality that set a piece apart from the rest. And our personal interests in art and sculpture are expressed in the one-of-a-kind works that we find and offer. Our merchandise mix is still informed by our knowledge and love of “real” antiques, however, so there is never any telling what kinds of things we might layer together!

We married in 1999 and settled in tiny Jefferson NY, in the northern foothills of the Catskill Mountains. Not much business to be done up here, so we sell in Hudson and in High Point NC, and at shows all over NY and New England. The rest of the time we are likely to be cooking, or driving our boys to some soccer thing, or wrangling unruly teenagers in our youth group. It’s a good life.
