Steven and I are thrilled to debut the oil paintings, watercolors and small works on paper of Niels Michaelsen. We showed a selection for the first time last week at 214 Modern Vintage during High Point Market. We have been given the opportunity to handle much of the his life's work by his daughter, and are enjoying the process of sorting, cataloging and simply getting to know this artist's diverse portfolio.

With work spanning six decades and a number of different media and styles, Michaelsen explored and expressed his vision in many ways. There is a whole lot of surrealism including landscapes and portraits of people. There are also loose, abstract works as well as meticulously detailed still lives. Not to mention, they range from small, tight works on paper to very large paintings on canvas.

In this vignette the surrealist landscape in oil is Michaelsen's, as is the small pen and paper work on the shelf.

Niels Michaelsen was born in 1924 in Newark NJ to Norwegian immigrant parents. He served in the Army from 1942-1945 and was stationed in New Guinea. In 1949 he earned a Certificate in Painting from the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art. He made his career designing and illustrating for the advertising and PR industry, and continued to paint throughout.

A review of a one-man show held in Brooklyn in 1976 reads, in part: "...whether Michaelsen is being playful or arch, matter-of-fact or ambiguous - and there are compositions in all these attitudes - his technicianship is flawless.  The control with which he executes forms and modulates colors is literally as fantastic as his imagery."

We are thrilled to make this work available. We believe it has both artistic and decorative merit, and we can attest that it just gets better as you live with it. Please continue to check the Niels Michaelsen page in our Gallery as we add more works.
